qUESTION 2: How does your media product represent particular social groups?
SYNTH, although featuring different social groups such as university students and war veterans, isn't about individual demographics but instead is a colorful commentary on a societal attitude towards violence in the media. Of course, through their mere featuring you are making a statement on them through representation; for example, although the students are there mainly to relate to my target audience and urbanize the threat of the SYNTH Killer, their outfits are pretty standard teen outfits, Callum Hunt in particular is wearing a letter-man jacket which connotes jock culture and could be read as a reinforcement of that sub culture, especially given the context of a horror film which famously sport these types as macho self-righteous authorities. Although he is the character with the most dialogue and who has a protective instinct, his smaller frame and more sensitive exchanges paint a more humble figure in keeping with the actual 21st century teenager rather than the hyperbolic caricatures of traditional flicks.
